LOUIS RIEL DAY (Manitoba)
Monday, February 20, 2017
In an era of colonialism and racism, Louis Riel had a dream of a civilized world that embraces all cultures. He made great sacrifices defending the rights, the freedoms, and the cultures of his new North-West Nation. In so doing he became the father of the province of Manitoba and Canada’s Indigenous (Métis) father of Confederation.
On Canada’s sesquicentennial year, the Friends of Louis Riel Society in British Columbia are commemorating Riel with our friends in L’Union nationale metisse Saint-Joseph du Manitoba. Like L’Union we call on Canada to exonerate Louis Riel and recognize him as Canada’s Indigenous (Métis) father of Confederation.
